CIS, explained

See the tax you’re owed back, all year.

Contractors take 20% off your labour under CIS. Most subcontractors pay less than that once their mileage and expenses are counted. The difference comes back as a refund, if your records are in order.

  • Every deduction counted. Payslips, receipts and business miles feed one running estimate.
  • Nothing missed. The app spots months you worked but have no CIS statement for.
  • Ready for your return. Your year’s figures laid out the way the Self Assessment form asks for them.

Questions

Good to know.

Who is it for?

Self-employed people working in UK construction under the Construction Industry Scheme: trades, labourers, site supervisors and anyone paid by contractors with CIS deducted.

Does it file my tax return?

No. It keeps your records and estimates your tax and CIS refund, and lays out your year’s figures ready for your Self Assessment return or your accountant. The estimate is a guide, not tax advice.

How does automatic mileage work?

Your phone notices when you start driving and records the trip with GPS until you stop. Trips to and from your sites can be marked as business automatically, and the claim is worked out at HMRC’s simplified mileage rates.

Will it drain my battery?

It only uses GPS while you’re driving. The rest of the time it relies on Android’s built-in activity detection and site boundaries, which use very little power.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet. It’s Android only for now. Email me if you’d like to hear when that changes.
